Website tragic

From time to time we see some customers with a tragic website experience but not often we write about that. But this one does make the others just like minor mistakes.

http://www.handicarriers.co.nz/ is a simple 5-page website with one page for submitting orders, quotes or a sample request.

The client had asked us to move the website to another hosting provider as she experienced some difficulties with the existing (not to be named) hosting provider which also seemed to be the website developer/designer. So we got the FTP login details to download all the website's source code.

Soon enough we figured out that the website was built using the CakePHP framework but to get the whole website working on another hosting server wasn't that straight forward. Some difficulties we had to overcome were -

  • Old version of CakePHP
After installing the newest version of CakePHP the website did not work, so we decided to copy all CakePHP from the existing hosting provider.
  • Copy of existing website
Going through the website which we finally got to work properly, we saw straight away the the web developer had copied an existing website (http://www.budgetbins.co.nz/ in this case) they had been developing as there was still the sitemap.xml file of the copied website on the handicarriers website. Further was the used database copied as well and had heaps of obsolete information in it from the copied website.
Compare the two website and you will see that even the design is the same with just a slight change!
  • Master password of web developer / hosting.
After digging some deeper into the code, looking for answers why things did not go as supposed to we came across the master password of the hosting company which they apparently use to access all their developed websites and basically give full access to their content, orders, mail-outs and such.
In other words a great lack of security.

It is no wonder that this particular client wanted to move to another hosting provider. A-Vision has been able to support in the move and also to do some optimisations to make it better searchable by internet search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Static websites

Static websites are websites which will not `automatically` change once they have been made. If you want to update the website you have to go to the web developer/designer which then will change the website according to your needs.
These websites are useful when there is no need for frequent updates for example if you deliver a product or service which does not change much.
Static websites are in general cheaper than dynamic websites to build. But if you don't want to depend on the web designers availability, you can choose for a so called CMS (Content Management System) for your website (see 'Contents Management Systems' for more information).

Dynamic websites

The content of a dynamic website changes more or less `automatically`. These websites are often database driven and the content shown depends on the data available in the database. For example the vacancies in the database of a recruitment bureau can be automatically shown on their website once the vacancy has been approved.
But of course there are thousands of other examples, so if you wonder if a dynamic website is possible for you, please contact us.
